The Affordable Care Act, Public Policy, and the Future of Athletic Training
While the Affordable Care Act has been hotly debated by all persons of the political spectrum, what has not been argued is that the law has already and will still significantly change the health care landscape in the United States of America. While the Affordable Care Act has been hotly debated by all persons of the political spectrum, what has not been argued is that the law has already and will still significantly change the health care landscape in the United States of America. What is not so clear is how it will affect allied health professions such as athletic training. This paper looks at various sections of the law and examines their impact on athletic training, mainly identifying areas of growth for the profession. Additionally, other means of public policy are considered as means for expanding and promoting athletic trainers as legitimate providers of health care to specific groups of Americans. Presented as a policy document, the following paper must come with the guidance that much of what is known about the Affordable Care Act is hypothetical. As the law continues to come into effect, policy makers and scholars have yet to be able to fully examine the effectiveness of the law’s various implements. As such, the author has specified where he believes there is concise opportunity for the profession of athletic training to model itself in terms of recognition and compensation. While concrete proposals are made by the author, it should be noted that athletic trainers are not specifically mentioned by the law, and therefore, significant public policy maneuvers must be made by the profession to fall under the umbrella of the Affordable Care Act.
