Though born and raised in southern Illinois, Derrick was made in St. Louis. While attending Saint Louis University, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in science and Master’s degree in athletic training, he was inspired by the Jesuit pursuit of a more just society. He is guided by the tenets of Catholic social justice and believes that government that can do good should do good – for all. At SLU, Derrick was passionate about politics, quickly joining College Democrats and volunteering on the campaigns of Barack Obama and Claire McCaskill. His fondest memories include volunteering at Campus Ministry; he was SLU’s male attendee for the Governor’s Student Leadership Forum on Faith and Values and Governor’s Prayer Breakfast in 2010. Derrick currently resides in the Princeton Heights neighborhood, where he is an active member of the neighborhood association. He is a parishioner and lector at Our Lady of Sorrows and an active member in St. Louis Young Democrats and the 12th Ward Regular Democratic Organization. Derrick is an athletic trainer for St. Luke’s Hospital and Saint Louis Priory School.
